online tone generators? how acurate are they?
i tried one out tonite. and on the subwoofer test my a7s were still loud at around 40 hz. from what i was reading here they should have trailed off at 70 or 90. ??

I did a spot check at several frequencies of the one you have listed there and it checks out OK. Didn't put a scope on it for distortion, etc., but the tones sound accurate enough.
[edit] that's actually a pretty cool site; did some exploring there with the various tests they have. my old ears are definitely are beat to hell.

I have had good luck with several tone gen's. Some only sweep but you can get around this by sweeping from and to the same freq.

At 40 HZ you are hearing a lot of harmonics. The generator produces a pure tone, the speaker doesn't.
Just because the dial says 40 does not mean you are hearing 40

that sounds about right. i'll need to get a mic and check it with an analyzer at the same time. this would be a good way to weed out problems. i didn't try the program with the sub yet. i could hopefully get an idea of what it should sound like.Originally Posted by Old Guy

From where? As you noted, the tone generator isn't creating any harmonic structure [or at least not supposed to], so assuming no EQ is being used, then seems like only room/boundary gain can account for the lack of an obviously shelved LF with any of the reflex vented horns.

If you put a 40 Hz sine wave in you get more than that out of a speaker.

Hmm, the old tone generators I got off the net back in the '90s limits them to a single frequency, same as the '50s CBS tone record, so don't go low/high enough to generate even the 1st harmonic one octave away, though of course the record had the typical > 8 kHz vinyl 'hiss'.
Note that the old tone software also had white, pink noise 'tones' as well as 'saw-tooth' and square-wave sines, which do generate harmonics, so wondering if one of these is what you're referring to.
If so, then in room, a speaker's harmonics can be as loud or louder than the fundamental [harmonic distortion] and due to the way we hear this can make the bass sound louder/deeper than it actually is, which many manufacturers have exploited to a fare-thee-well for decades now.

I have seen harmonics louder than the fundamental when the speaker is severely driven outside it's range. Not sure 40 is far enough out. But 20 might be...
